Introducing Kedyou Premium - an update to how we plan to make money with Kedyou

how will kedyou make money

In August 2023, we wrote a blog post about how we planned to make money with Kedyou, where we outlined our intentions of keeping workspaces completely free while charging for organisational features and tools outside the core workspace. As we’ve worked on the initial concept, we’ve realised that this needed adjusting for Kedyou to continue forward

What’s changed

We spent the last year testing our original plan around organisations, including a two-term trial with a private school in Perth. Unfortunately, we didn’t see the engagement needed to make this approach sustainable. As such, we’ve had to reconsider how we can keep Kedyou running moving forward

What we’ve learned

During our organisation trial, we saw some organic adoption of Kedyou from private tutors. As part of our reassessment, we’ve reached out to as many tutors as we could who are using Kedyou frequently. From our discussions, we’ve learned that tutors are:

  • Tutoring 3-4 students a week on average
  • Moving all of their students onto Kedyou
  • Finding Kedyou easier to justify to parents than other applications
  • Running more group sessions
  • Saving money and time on fuel and driving

While our original monetisation plan wasn’t viable, we’ve learned that Kedyou is creating real value for private tutors. We plan to capture a small percentage of it to make Kedyou into something we can do as careers instead of part-time while working at day jobs

As a general rule, we’re building to capture a small percentage of the revenue generated from individuals who make money on our site

Going Forward: Kedyou Premium

Soon, we’re introducing a two-tier system, with a Premium plan designed for private tutors:

Free:

  • Create unlimited workspaces
  • Use video calls without restrictions
  • One-page limit per workspace
  • When uploading PDFs larger than one page, you’ll select which page to use
  • All basic workspace features

Premium (A$12/month or A$98/year):

  • Unlimited pages per workspace
  • Full PDF uploads without restrictions
  • AI-generated notes and worksheets
  • Increased storage capacity

Why this price?

For tutors doing 3-4 sessions per week at $50/hour, the premium subscription represents about 1.5-2% of tutoring revenue. We want to keep prices as low as possible while making Kedyou something we can work on full time. We hope that by keeping the cost low for tutors, Kedyou’s value far exceeds the cost

Our ongoing commitment to you

We know this is a significant change from our original promise of “always free workspaces without limitations.” However, we need to capture some of the value we’ve created with our work for Kedyou to continue. While this is a deviation from our original commitment, we still have an ongoing commitment to you to provide much more value than we try to capture

If you’re a tutor who teaches less frequently or if the premium price is a barrier, please reach out to us. We’re still learning and want to work with our community to ensure our pricing reflects the value we provide while keeping education accessible

Our mission hasn’t changed - we still want to make quality education accessible globally. If you have any feedback or questions about these changes, please let us know
